a.k.a. the one with ALL the dialogue.
Okay, so first off I want to say another big THANK YOU to everyone who wished me and Luke good things for our upcoming wedding. I tried to make sure I thanked everyone individually, but I’m saying it again because it was very sweet of you all and you’re awesome. ♥
EDIT: A new vote incentive is up!
Okay, so now the big news thing I’ve been wrestling with all week.
I’ve decided I’m going to completely overhaul my Patreon. Get rid of the current rewards, milestones, the whole shebang, and just start fresh. Here’s why:
After running my comic a few different ways over the years, I’ve discovered the most important thing for me is that I enjoy creating it. If I’m not enjoying what I’m doing, then it’s just not worth it.
I absolutely love story-telling, and I’m so excited to be able to share what I create with all of you, and I look forward to seeing your reactions to each new development. New comic day is my favorite day of the week.
Now, while I created my Patreon with high hopes and good intentions, in retrospect, I kinda did it wrong. And I haven’t been running it in a way I’m happy with for a while either.
The biggest problem is that I created a huge amount of extra work for myself. I know an extra page a month and the Q&As might not sound like much, but with most of my drawing time being constrained to the weekends, it’s enough to seriously set me behind. I don’t have an opportunity to work up a buffer, let alone work on the other related stories. (Haha remember Ixion?) Honestly, I haven’t even had much time to sketch for fun or practice lately.
-And right here I’m going to take a moment to draw some attention to the comics that update 2, 3, or 5 days a week, because holy damn that is amazing. I read several that have schedules like that and I am frankly in awe of the creators that can maintain that sort of pace, month after month, year after year. Everyone should appreciate the hell out of those people because that is some serious tireless dedication and love.-
Anyway, my point is that sometimes I get a little too ambitious with what I think I can do, so I’m going to rein it in a little and get back to focusing on the actual stories, rather than trying to create more and more bonus content, and then feeling stressed out and like I’m disappointing people when I can’t keep up with it all. The last thing I want to do is get burned out, or start producing pages I’m not happy with just for the sake of churning them out at a pace that’s not realistic for me.
Now, with all that in mind, I don’t want to shut down my Patreon. I still think it’s fundamentally a good idea, and it’s been a nice way to reward those of my fans who want to throw me a little financial thank you. (Which is very appreciated, of course. I may want to run the comic as a hobby rather than a business, but the extra financial support has been extremely helpful and given me a more stable platform to work off of.) If possible, I want to restructure my Patreon to hopefully retain most of those generous pledges, while also not stressing myself out or taking too much time away from the projects the Patreon is actually for.
I’ve made a little thing over on Patreon that’s open to the public, so anyone can view or comment on it. Or comment on here if that’s easier for you. I’ve got a few ideas of what I can do with Kahmith Patreon 2.0, but I’d love to hear any feedback or ideas you guys have.
My personal goal here, story-wise, is to continue being able to update Shades once weekly without feeling burned out or overwhelmed, and also allow myself the time to work on other projects (primarily Ixion, Spinout, the alien guide, and the shimsa novel) on a free-form, rotating sort of schedule. Each story (while interconnected) has a different feel to it, and sometimes I’m more into working on one of them than the others. Shades will always be the main focus, as it’s by far the longest, most complicated story, but I want to be able to tell the others too, even if they don’t update nearly as regularly.
So… the TL;DR version is avsaroke is over-ambitious and took on too much, and now has to reel herself back in. Regular updates will not be affected. Stories will always be free. Patreon people are in for a bit of turbulence.
Oh, and also the April end-of-month bonus page will be the last end-of-month bonus page. It’s just… going to be a bit late. My week exploded and I didn’t get a chance to even start it yet. So… there will be a bonus page shoehorned in somewhere, at some point, in the nearish future. The exact date depends my workload at work, and how difficult wedding preparations end up being. But you will not lose that extra page! I want to be very clear about that, since April’s Patreon pledges supported it.
Thank you for reading my very long, rambling post, everyone, and for reading the comic in general! You’re wonderful fans, every one of you. 🙂
